classic film

One thing that has kept sane is my love for movies. I love watching all movies from the Oscar nominated to old classics and box-office hits. Almost every night in quarantine, my family and I (or sometimes just me and my sister, Taylor) all sit down to watch a movie.

My phone doesn’t have a good camera to capture a good photo.

The other night, we watched The Great Gatsby for the first time. It stars award-winning Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan, with Baz Luhrmann as their director. Luhrmann has done other successful films such as the remake of Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge. It won best production and costume design at the 2014 Academy Awards. It was a really flambout film, and exhilarating to watch as this extremely rich man, Jay Gatsby, throws parties in hope to impress and win over the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan, but she is married to old money Tom Buchanan. Nick Carraway tells the great events of Gatsby by writing a novel, years in the future. It is a captivating film of almost star-crossed lovers and the ending was difficult to watch.

Another movie we watched was Little Women directed by Greta Gerweg, starring Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, and Emma Waston. The 2019 film won best costume design at the Oscars and got nominated for five other awards. This movie was also based on a classic book, and about an author writing about her life with her sisters. It was a really sweet movie that just made you smile. I liked it and understood how it got so many nominations. I just wished the ending played out so the girl gets the guy, but the real ending more resembled her character.

The last movie I’ve seen recently is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It was directed once again by J.J. Abrams, starring Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver. It was nominated for 3 Oscars this year, mostly for its score. The music was written by John Williams, who I think is one of the best movie composers ever. His music really takes you into the movie. I love the Star Wars movies and I think this last one was a nice ending to all of it. The plot was excellent but it is one of those movies you have to watch at least twice to understand everything that is happening.

This is my cat, Beau Beau.
